- Volunteer efforts are focused on agriculture, environment and health
concerns. Volunteers introduce water harvesting, crop rotation and
soil fertility management to village farmers to help increase crop
yields. Volunteers teach villagers how better management of natural
resources contributes to their personal and economic well-being.
Environmental projects focus on forestry, agroforestry, soil
conservation and education. Roughly 25 percent of children under the
age of two are malnourished, resulting in one of the world's highest
infant mortality rates. Volunteers work to improve the nutritional
status of children and pregnant and lactating women in rural areas
through dietary education

management of the Centre. The Government of Niger, in addition to its
voluntary contributions, has provided office facilities and vehicles.
The Establishment Agreement between ACMAD and Niger has enabled Member
Countries and partners to work at the Centre, making Niamey a
meteorological hub for Africa.

- Hausa, a West African trade language, is spoken as a first language
by as many as 50 million Africans. The Hausa are concentrated
primarily in Northern Nigeria (perhaps 40 million) and Niger. There
are also well-established populations in Ghana and Cameroon. There is
also a diaspora of Hausa in Sudan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Maghreb,
particularly Algeria and Libya as oil field workers. Hausa is also a
lingua franca in many West African countries, though no reliable
estimates are available.
