WaterAid - is a unique charity. It is the only one in the UK to specialise in just three things water, sanitation and hygiene education. Research on water, sanitation and hygiene education : Mega-Slums The coming sanitary crisis By the year 2000 there will be 23 cities in the world with populations in excess of 10 million people. Eighteen of these cities will be in the developing world. This report highlights the plight of the urban poor and the sanitary revolution that will be needed to head off the global sanitary crisis. Part Two- The Response Slum populations - who they are, why they are there, how they live, what they want - have also won reconsideration. The image of helpless human flotsam washed onto the urban shore has been replaced by that of the determined and upwardly mobile pioneer[48]. In spite of the squalor slum-dwellers endure, their lack of adequate employment and civic amenities, and their separation from rural roots and kin from which women especially suffer, they have stuck to life in town. And not only to their own but to others' benefit.
